Orangutans, one of Southeast Asia's keystone species, are in serious decline as their rainforest habitat is lost due to deforestation for palm oil plantations. It's #NationalHoneyBeeDay! The western honey bee is native to the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa and was introduced to North America in the 1600s. They create elaborate nests called hives containing up to 20,000 individuals during the summer months and work together in a highly structured social order. Each bee belongs to one of three specialized groups, queens, drones and workers, called castes. Bees, like other pollinators, play a vital role in sustaining our ecosystems. They are responsible for food we eat and for plants we see but are experiencing dramatic population declines.
