TLDR; I ran my first organized race ever over the weekend, at the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon. I wore my newest Superfit Hero capris and was 100% able to focus on my race because they did not slip, slide, or need tugging up even ONCE.
This race was a big deal to me because I dislocated my right kneecap over 10 years ago (2006) and for almost 10 years following the initial injury, I have re-injured the same knee doing all sorts of physical activities - running, walking, swimming, hiking, dancing, snowboarding, playing tennis and badminton, rock climbing, yoga - and have had to endure a host of other problems that stemmed from the injury and the imbalances and weaknesses it caused. My doctor at the time recommended that I avoid running for cardio, and so for over ten years I haven't run as exercise.
In recent years I really credit traditional yoga and aerial yoga for helping me to heal these imbalances and strengthen my body to the point where my injury is no longer the issue it used to be (though I still try to be extra-careful). About a year ago I was inspired by my older brother to run a half marathon before my 30th birthday - not only cross it off my bucket list, but also to prove to myself that I CAN run, and that the injury is no longer holding me back either physically or mentally.
Well, I did it. 13.1 miles is the longest distance I've ever run in one go, and I ran it faster than I've been training. This is something I never thought I would ever be able to do and with the support of many people (including the friend who ran with me) I can now say that I have officially completed a half marathon!
